History

Palampur town is situated at the foot hills of Dhauladhar range of Himalayas. 34 K.M. from Kangra and 35 KM. from Dharamshala. Palampur is bounded on the north by a crest of Dhauladhar hills and surrounded by beautiful tea gardens. It is Sub-divisional head quarters of the Kangra Distt. having regional offices of various deptts and majority of the people works in Govt. offices and tea gardens. The most important feature of the town is Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University which is first of its kind in the state which is playing a major role for the development of the town and its economic potential. Beside an administrative town it is an important tourist place. The town is famous for its worth seen sceneries and tea gardens. The principal industries are tea, groceries, wood and wool.

The Urban Local Body came into existence in the year 1904 as notified area committee and it raised to small town committee in year 1932 and finally got the full status of Palampur Municipal Committee in 1953. Besides other basic function of local body it has its own water supply and supplying drinking water almost for 18 hours which is unique in Himachal Pradesh. The Municipal Corporation has been delimited among seven wards. Accordingly there are 7 elected and three nominated members.
